Technical course in video data collection, video editing, transcription and sharing

A three-day course with focus on production, editing and transcription of video footage. All course days include practical exercises. The course is for PhD-students, post docs, master students upon recommendation from their teachers, as well as senior researchers.

Course Information

A three-day course with focus on production, editing and transcription of video footage. All course days include practical exercises and are based on the material produced throughout the course.

The course is for PhD-students, post docs, master students upon recommendation from their teachers, as well as senior researchers.

Course starts at 9.00 and ends at 16.00 each day.

Max. 12 participants.

Day 1 – Production of video

  • Introduction and overview.
  • Video recording, including choice of camera angles, camera work, coordination between different cameras, sound, digital formats.
  • Sound recording.

Day 2 – Video editing

  • Sound editing, software for acoustic analysis
  • Video editing, including cutting, resizing and formatting of sound and video tracks, setting of more camera angles in the same video, subtitles, anonymizing participants, conversion, compression, and export of screenshots.

Day 3 – Transcription of video

  • Overview of transcription software (ELAN, CLAN, Transana) and transcription databases
  • Introduction to CLAN.
  • Coordination of sound, video files, images, field notes within the same CLAN document
  • Discussion of the participants’ specific needs for software in their own research and possible solutions.
