Launch Conference: Algorithms, Data and Democracy (DANISH), April 9, virtual

How do we regulate algorithms, how do we learn to understand them, and how do we get the best out of them? Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, Margrethe Vestager, CEO of Microsoft Denmark, Nana Bule, and Tech Ambassador, Anne Marie Engtoft Larsen, discuss the important topic of algorithms based on the presentation of the objectives for the project “Algorithms, Data and Democracy” (Original: Algoritmer, Data og Demokrati).

New technologies and digital solutions tend to be the answer to everything. On the reconstruction after the corona pandemic, on export growth, on the green transition, on the development of the welfare society and our health sector, on an easier everyday life for many. The algorithms are already everywhere in our everyday lives and often without us noticing it. But who controls them? Who sets the framework for their use? Do we have the competencies to understand what the algorithms can do to us and for us? How do we use the algorithms to strengthen our democracy?

These are major themes we invite you to discuss on April 9, 2021, from 9 a.m. to noon. We are doing this to simultaneously mark the start of the anniversary project that the VILLUM FOUNDATION and the VELUX FOUNDATION have taken the initiative for. These two have allocated DKK 100 million over ten years for a broad research and information project on the consequences of digital development, its opportunities and challenges to democracy.

The project has been named: Algorithms, Data and Democracy (ADD). The winners of the research project were found in January, and we are now ready to present the project’s first roadmap and initiatives.

At this conference, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, Margrethe Vestager, CEO of Microsoft Denmark, Nana Bule, and Tech Ambassador, Anne Marie Engtoft Larsen, will each respectively give their views on how we will be ready for the next stages of digital development, how we create the framework to get the best out of them and how we find out how to use development to strengthen democracy. Event will be held in Danish.

Location: All interested parties can participate in live streaming. Application necessary. Link to live streaming will be shared before the event to those registered. Due to the corona restrictions, only a small group of specially invited guests can physically attend the conference.
