The third Digital Literacy course kicks off on May 30, 2023, with 26 participants from three universities. They will be supported by specialists from the Center for Humanities Computing, Aarhus University, and colleagues from the University of Southern Denmark and Aalborg University.

Supported by It-vest, the course aims to develop skills for humanities and social science researchers to conduct research with large datasets and take advantage of new methods in for example Natural Language Processing.

Professor Mads Rosendahl Thomsen, the course director, says that the course model is demanding but straightforward:

“You have to bring a research idea and a plan for obtaining data. In return, we provide technical support, teach the basics of working with digital sources and tools, and create a community for sparring with peers on how to expand the pallet of approaches.”

Participants have already submitted abstracts on their research plans, which include projects on social media, life writing, art history, Japanese literature, and curriculum research.

Professor Kristoffer L. Nielbo, the head of the Center for Humanities Computing, says that:

“We have seen in the previous editions of the course how much we can move people’s research and also help them rethink fundamental research questions. In a number of cases, the course has served as a launchpad for much larger projects.”

The focus of the course is the researchers, but there is also valuable on-the-job training for the support team, who are constantly improving their ability to operationalize the questions asked by the researchers.
Following the kickoff seminar and its focus on responsible data retrieval and management, two more seminar days before summer will focus on AI and machine learning and analysis and presentation of data.

The course runs until January 2024 and will end with an open for all conference.
